I’ll Take Romance (#MFRWAuthor)

This week’s topic is my most romantic memory. It probably says a lot about me that this memory concerns food.

My husband and I took a trip to California a while ago. We rented a turquoise Chrysler convertible and set off north from San Francisco on Highway 1. The scenic road took us along the coast, through the redwoods, from winery to winery. Our northernmost destination was Fort Bragg, California.

This small town was originally a military garrison prior to the Civil War. Nowadays it is a picturesque area with an artsy downtown.

What I remember most is sitting across for each other in a candlelit booth eating the most delectable bowl of cream of mushroom soup and drinking white wine. Obviously, the way to my heart is through my stomach.

Mary Green book review

Historical Fiction, Regency era

Stonehouse Publishing

Release Date: May 1, 2016

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mary Green by Melanie Kerr. This story is very much in the Jane Austen tradition of manners and country estates.

The title character starts off Cinderella-like. She’s living with the relations of a woman who adopted her from an orphanage and subsequently died. Never really part of the family, she’s treated almost as a servant. When her twenty-first birthday arrives, it brings with it some startling news. Suddenly she’s rich.

Guided by her own conscience and her newly acquired companion, Mary slowly finds her way to happiness in the new world she’s entered. Finding love is a bit more complicated. Which of the three brothers from a neighboring family has actually captured her heart and not just her infatuation?

This is the Canadian author’s second novel. It is both well-written and well-plotted. Kerr has created distinctive characters that we like in spite of their flaws. Theirs is a gentle world where forgiveness is possible and goodness is its own reward.

I predict we’ll be seeing much more of Kerr’s writing in the future.

Mary Green, obscure orphan and ward of the wealthy Hargreaves family, has always accepted her inferior position with grace, humility, and gratitude. When she discovers that her only friend is to leave the country forever, that her confidence has been betrayed by the unfeeling youngest daughter of the family, and that her very deprivation is the object of the mockery and scorn of everyone she has sought to honour, she determines to cast them off and make her own way in the world.

On her twenty-first birthday, free to choose her own destiny, she dreams of peace and tolerance, and perhaps a partner who might be noble enough to love her in all her simplicity. But when an unexpected foray into London society disrupts all her plans, she is faced with an uncharacteristic storm of feelings. Will she grow strong and happy in her independence, or will her character be lost amidst her newfound ambition? Unable to trust the whims of her own heart, Mary is forced to confront the question that has forever plagued her: Who is she and where does she come from?

Across Borders book release

Genre: FICTION / Thrillers / Crime

About the book:

In Across Borders, Lawson Caine, a seasoned Border Patrol agent, is stationed in Presidio Texas with legendary lawman Capt. James Garrett.  Lawson, who is from a long linage of lawmen, has gained the respect and reverence from his team, Dale Chanson, Terry Bennet, and the crazy member, Alex Sweeny.

Lawson never expected anything to come between his dedication with the Border Patrol and his brotherhood with Sweeny until he meets local pharmacy owner, Lia Gonzales.  Against her father’s wishes Lia continues to see Lawson not realizing the inevitable consequences.

In this story of protecting others on the border and the heartache of relationships you will find yourself in the lives of those who have sworn to uphold the law, no matter the cost.

Pulling onto the pavement of Hwy 170, Amalia Gonzales held on to the sack of prescription medicine she was delivering. Amalia had just opened a local pharmacy in Presidio a few months earlier and had already made many customers, but with many of her customers in their elder years, she made frequent deliveries. Amalia was nicknamed “Lia” during elementary school when the students and teachers had a hard time pronouncing her name.

“I’ll hold them,” a young female said from the passenger seat.

“Thanks Erika,” Lia answered. Erika Santeljo was not only Lia’s best friend, but helped run the pharmacy. Today Lia had asked Erika to ride with her because their first stop was to a schizophrenia patient who made her nervous.

“I told you he’d be OK. As long as you get his meds to him in time, he’ll act normal,” Erika said, tucking the sack under her feet. “He still creeps me out.”

Driving back north toward Presidio, Erika turned the radio station to the only country channel they could receive. With Hank Williams blaring from the 6X9 Sony speakers, the girls sang along.

Lia turned down the radio. “While we out here, I can drop off Mrs. Jones’ meds,” she said, slamming on the brake.

“Not if you kill us both.”

Lia looked over her shoulder and slammed the Jeep Grand Cherokee in reverse. Spinning the tires, she backed to the street she had just passed. Then turning onto the dirt road, the Jeep fishtailed as she floored the gas, nothing Erika wasn’t used to. Flying over a hill, they noticed the three Border Patrol trucks off in the distance with one of the trucks’ cabs disappearing just over the ridge.

Lia pointed to the trucks. “I have a prescription for one of the Border Patrol guys. Check in the bag and see if Alex Sweeny’s bag is in there,” Lia asked.

Erika dug through the sack. “Yep. What is he taking?” She examined the bottle. “Victoria?” she asked Lia.

“It’s his daughters.” The Jeep jetted by the road that led to the trucks, “If they’re still there on the way back, we’ll stop.”

“Why take the chance? I could see me some Border Patrol officers,” Erika replied with a devious tone. Lia looked over at her with a smile and slammed on the brakes. “Lia! You’re killing me!” The Jeep fishtailed the opposite direction as Lia turned down the road and straightened up just in time to cross a cattle gap. As they approached the three trucks, they noticed the farthest truck doors were open. The Jeep crawled to a stop.

“Drugs, please.” Lia held her hand out.

“You’re not going without me.” Erika opened her door and climbed out.

A childhood promise has Chance Walker picking up a guitar once again. Sure, he’s been busy growing up, finishing college, and even law school. He made a promise to his dying mother and he’s determined to keep it. While his guitar playing dreams were big when he was a kid, his skill is rusty and he hires Erin Michaelson to bring music back into his life. Not only is she incredibly talented, she’s one of the sexiest women he’s ever met. It’s hard to focus on correct finger position when her sweet scent threatens to drive him out of his mind.

Less than twenty-four hours after his first lesson he sees her again, but this time she’s on stage using another name and seducing an entire audience of men. He played the gentleman card once, and it got him nowhere. This time, all bets are off and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her. A single, sizzling backstage kiss will change both of their lives forever, because Chance soon realizes that Erin is not just an itch, she’s an obsession that he refuses to live without.

Erin Michaelson spends her days teaching guitar and her nights on stage as her sexy alter-ego, Eva James. Music is her dream, her passion. All she wants is to say goodbye to a lifetime of scraping by, working two jobs, and paying for past mistakes. When a major record label exec hears her band play, she gets her big break. But life can be a real bitch, and meeting Chance now is just bad timing.

Problem #1: The record label wants her to dump her band and move to L.A. Problem #2: She hadn’t counted on Chance Walker and the scorching heat of that first kiss. And last but not least is Problem #3: Is Chance really falling in love with the dull guitar teacher, or is he really just lusting after the sexy Eva James?

Will success make all of Erin’s dreams come true? Or will falling in love make them both crash and burn?

Eva James, or Erin, or whatever name she wanted to call herself, was a wild card. She burned bright, took chances, and followed her heart. And he wanted to taste that wild side with her.

When Eva James disappeared down the hallway that led to the restrooms, he got up off his barstool. He took one step before Mitchell’s hand landed on his right arm and Jake’s on his left.

“Whoa. Where do you think you’re going?” Jake’s shit-eating grin said he already knew the answer to that question.

“I’m going to get her.”

Derek burst out laughing. “Let him go. I gotta see this train wreck.”

“Screw you, Derek.”

Even Mitchell was grinning now, but he let go of Chance’s arm. “Go for it, brother. She’s going to love you, bad boy. Just so you know, that tie of yours can be used for all kinds of things besides wearing it in court.”

Derek was still chuckling. “We’ll have to pry her off your rebel ass with a crowbar.”

Chance flipped them all off and headed for the side of the stage to wait for her. He didn’t give a damn what any of his brothers said. So what if she wasn’t his normal type? Forget normal. He wanted her. He looked, and he wanted. End of story.

He was tired of playing it safe. Tired of taking care of other people’s problems. He needed a damn break. He wanted her to rattle his cage.

He wanted to talk to her, to touch her. And if she didn’t run scared? He damn sure was going to get her into his bed.

You have a passion for horses and horseback riding. How did that influence the themes and settings around your books?

Pictures of horses adorned my bedroom walls from the time I was five, when I was a little city girl in Minneapolis. I collected all the stories about horses I could and had my first book boyfriend crush on Alec Ramsay in The Black Stallion series. I got my first horse as a graduation from college present from my husband, and I was hooked for life, even getting my daughter her her first pony when she was six years old so we could ride together. She went on to become an equine veterinarian, and I still help her care for all the horses she’s collected since that first pony! I still have a horse of my own, so you can see I’m obsessed and have a hard time imagining a world without horses in it!

All my books have included horses to some extent. I’m not even stuck on one type of horse, or riding or rider—my first series of books revolved around English riding, dressage and eventing. My current series “Seven Brides for Seven Cowboys” takes place on a Wyoming ranch so I get to spend a lot of time with horses in these books. In my stories, I’ve used horses as therapy animals, as challenges for my characters, and as comforting best friends. I love sharing the beauty and versatility and healing power of horses with my readers.

What is it about your two main characters, Alec and Joely, that have made them so strong after going through such traumatic experiences?

I think what’s amazing about Alec and Joely is that neither of them has any idea when their story starts just where their real strengths lie. Joely was a beauty queen several times, and even though she isn’t vain she has always believed that what she has to offer the world revolves around her physical looks. What she discovers after her physical body is broken and scarred is that she doesn’t need to trade on outer beauty—her talents of kindness, understanding, and the ability to love despite peoples’ flaws are her truest assets—and they (along with Alec’s help) are what make her strong in the end.

Alec completely believes what makes him strong is the ability to bury things that remind him of pain and could make him bitter. He has a major physical disability, but he ignores it and gets on with life—and he even has the sunny disposition to go along with it. But what he doesn’t know is that burying his past and his anger really is a weakness. When he learns (with Joely’s help) to embrace what he sees as weaknesses and truly face his fears—he grows into the truly strong and resilient man he wants to be.

How long have you been writing and who influenced you?

I started making up stories and telling them to myself at night in bed as far back as when I was four and five years old. Later, when other kids were reading themselves to sleep, I started writing down these stories. I guess it was what would now be called fan fiction—I had lots of fun affairs and adventures with my favorite pop stars from Paul McCartney to Bobby Sherman! Eventually I started writing “real” short stories and then novels. In the 80s and 90s I fell in love with the romances of LaVyrle Spencer. To this day she’s my ideal when it comes to telling a love story and I don’t try to copy her, but I do try to live up to her example.
