Mad about the Major review

Mad about the Major, a novella by Elizabeth Boyle and part 8.5 of her Bachelor Chronicles, is just the thing for a summer read, light and fluffy as cotton candy.

Poor Arabella. As the daughter of a duke, she is doomed to wed the heir to another duke, sight unseen. And poor Kingsley. As the heir to a duke, he is doomed to wed a high-born chit, also sight unseen. Wait a minute! Can we see a plot unfolding?

The mistaken identities begin immediately and continue as Arabella, now just using her nickname Birdie, and Major Kingsley, who fails to disclose he’s also titled, set off on a day’s adventure. We and the bystanders they encounter along the way quickly see that romance is afoot although it takes the protagonists a while to reach that conclusion.

I loved the clever dialogue and the charming characters.  A fun diversion.

KissCon launching on West Coast

I often wish I lived on the West Coast. Now I have kiss two more reasons. Avon is launching new events called KissCon.

What does KissCon entail? A group of Avon authors will be doing a signing, a Q&A, and fun, interactive events with the audience. There will be prizes and raffles. Authors attending each event will vary slightly. Attendance is free, unless you spring for a VIP ticket—which gets you in to an exclusive reception with the authors, as well as one of the featured authors’ books.

Maybe I will finish one of my own romance novels in time to be featured at a Florida KissCon someday.  Anyway, here are the locations:

KissCon Seattle (at Copperfield’s Books in San Rafael, CA, Saturday, 11/22):

Avon Books and Copperfield’s San Rafael are joining forces to bring romance readers the very first KissCon (an Avon Affair!) on November 22, 2014.  There will be a special limited-attendance VIP event, and a larger public event.  We are encouraging readers to reserve tickets for both!

Featured authors include: Ilona Andrews, Elizabeth Boyle, Rachel Gibson, Laura Kaye, TJ Kline, Julie Anne Long, Sarah MacLean, Cathy Maxwell,Jennifer Ryan and Lori Wilde.

Let’s hear it for the aunts

It probably says a lot about me that I found the most entertaining characters in Elizabeth Boyle”s book If Wishes Were Earls to be the three (or maybe four) aunts of the hero. They are charmers in a Dame Maggie Smith, dowager countess kind of way. I want to be them when I grow up. Oh, wait. Maybe I already am. I think I can master the repartee. All I need is a castle.

The plot itself was a bit predictable although there were a couple surprises near the end. It was also a bit choppy in the use of flashbacks.

All in all though, it was a good read with a heroine who was far more resourceful than her hero.
