Loving Vivienne book review

This book is Book Six of Christina George’s Publicist Series. While she included enough explanatory material to make it viable on a stand alone basis, I was left wishing I’d read the earlier books. The plot revolved around a lot of past history and  resultant grudges, and that required a bit of reading between the lines to fill in the blanks.

Vivienne has written a hugely successful book that has just been turned into a movie (we authors should all be so lucky). On a vacation to Costa Rica, she meets Daniel, a very heroic hero indeed. He’s there helping out at a local orphanage although he is an intern back in New York City. That part struck me as far-fetched. I don’t believe interns can just pick up and fly off to Costa Rica no matter how noble their mission.

The book really demonstrates how family dynamics can get in the way of love if you let them. Don’t you let them.

BLURB:

Stacie Nightingale doesn’t what the 2.5 million dollars of blood money she’s been awarded as a result of the lawsuit she filed. She also doesn’t want the memories that are flooding her mind, causing her to remember the betrayal that led to her friend’s death and left Stacie with a traumatic brain injury. Neither of those circumstances matter though once her boyfriend Owen Landry proposes to her. She doesn’t want his proposal because of the circumstances that drove him to it. The mysterious woman he seems to be keeping company only fuels her insecurity and doubt. Stacie loves Owen, but with her past continuing to haunt her, she questions if their love is strong enough to survive.

Excerpt:

“This closet may as well be a garbage can,” Stacie snarled as she stormed across the bedroom to the master bath. After slipping on a robe, she returned to the bedroom to find Jenny laughing at her.

Her best friend’s laugh was as irritating as Owen’s smirk had been. “Just yesterday you were bragging about your beautiful wardrobe. You didn’t find anything inspiring this morning?”

“I made Owen go limp last night,” Stacie confessed, tossing another outfit onto the garbage heap on the bed and disappearing into the closet again.

Another annoying laugh. “You broke the Cajun Sex God? Is that even possible?”

Stacie poked her head out of the walk-in closet. “Not. Funny. Wait, what are you doing?”

Jenny tapped away on the touch screen of her phone. “I’m letting Ty know that Owen’s human. It’ll boost his confidence.”

Stacie crossed the room and tried to snag the phone from Jenny’s perfectly manicured hands, to no avail. Jenny could text blindfolded with one hand tied behind her back.

“You can’t tell Ty. You can’t tell anyone.”

“It happens to every guy at some point, Stace. Don’t take it personally.” The phone beeped with the sound of a successfully sent message before Jenny practically pushed Stacie out of the way. Letting the fashion diva do her thing, Stacie dropped onto the bed, using the garbage heap as a pillow while an arm fell across her eyes.

“But it’s never happened before.” What kind of cheese went well with whine? “I’d be fine with it except for what happened yesterday.”

Last One Home book revie

Published September 16, 2015 by francesothomas

LastOneHome_1

It’s been a long time since I read a Debbie Macomber novel. I strongly favor the Regency period and the like. However, I am finally working on a book of my own-gasp!-and it is contemporary and “clean.” Who better to draw inspiration from than Macomber?

I decided to check out Last One Home. It has more than 1000 reviews on Amazon, and 87 percent of those are either 4 or 5 stars. Would that I could do as well.

Oh, the writing was top notch. You don’t sell 170 million books without having extraordinary skills. But the characters were stereotypes and the plot was predictable.

The redeeming quality, and the one that makes Macomber a best-seller, I suppose, was her willingness to tackle spousal abuse in a realistic, albeit subdued, manner. Cassie’s ill-fated marriage displayed all the warning signs. And her inability to escape until her life was threatened was sadly typical of many women in her situation.

The family dynamics with the other two sisters rang true. Cassie had been her father’s favorite; when she needed help, her sisters turned on her. Sometimes those sibling rivalries do last a lifetime. The reunions and forgiveness happened a bit too easily to be totally believable to me.

The fact that Cassie didn’t jump right in to a happily ever after was a pleasant surprise.

Macomber hasn’t become my first choice in reading material, but I give her the respect she deserves for integrity and longevity. Is she one of your favorites?

Fall With Me coverJennifer L. Armentrout’s FALL WITH ME cover is here. This New Adult Contemporary Romance in Armentrout’s With You Saga is the 4th book in the series, and is being published by Avon Romance, an imprint of HarperCollins.

Here’s the blurb:

She’s been in love with him since she was fifteen, and he wishes that night they shared never happened. She’s sworn him off forever, but the past and future collide, forcing her to rely on the one man who broke her heart not once, but twice.

Her best friend since birth has been in a long-term care facility since he became a victim of a hate crime years ago, and the person who put him in there is out of prison and wanting to make amends with him and Roxy. She’s not sure she has room for forgiveness in her and when she begins to receive frightening messages and is on the receiving end of escalating violence, she thinks she knows who is to blame. The man who already destroyed one life already.

But Reece isn’t convinced. The threats are too personal, and even if Roxy doesn’t believe him, he’s not willing to let anyone hurt her. Including himself. He’s already messed up more than once when it comes to Roxy and he’s not going to let history repeat itself.

Caught in the Act release

Published September 16, 2014 by francesothomas

Today is the release of the second book in the “Independence Falls” series from contemporary romance writer Sara Jane Stone, Caught in the Act.

Here’s the blurb I got from Avon Impulse:

Falling for his rival’s little sister could cost him everything …

No one writes about passionate and forbidden love quite like Sara Jane Stone. Readers that loved the series’ first installment, Full Exposure, will not be able to resist this sexy follow up. The Independence Falls gang is back in Caught in the Act, and the romantic and sexual tension is higher than ever. This time, the book focuses on Liam Trulane, brother of Georgia Trulane, the first book’s female lead.

For Liam, failure is not an option. He is determined to win a place in Katie Summers’ life before she leaves Independence Falls for good. But first, he needs to make amends for the last time they got down and dirty.

Only problem? His professional success hinges on striking a deal to buy Katie’s family business. And after Liam’s relationship with their Katie went south years ago, the Summers brothers are more enemy than friend. If both parties agree to set the past aside, they can close the deal. But when Katie welcomes him back into her bed, Liam risks everything to make Katie his.

After Liam betrayed her trust, Katie Summers will do anything to keep him from walking away with the family business. She decides to seduce Liam, knowing that when her brothers find out, they will back off from the deal. And she’ll finally have her revenge. But when her plan spirals out of control, Katie learns that payback might come at too high a price…
